Eleanor

ELEANOR AS A CHRISTMAS ANGEL
By Elizabeth Wilson, GMDMEd.

Elizabeth Wilson used Ron Booker’s Eleanor for her Christmas angel dressed in glittering shades of gold.

The metallic china paints of the Glitter Collection were used to give Eleanor’s complexion a shimmering glow that coordinates with her golden costume and the color of her hair.

Elizabeth used silks, laces, trims and embroidery in various shades of gold were used for Eleanor’s medieval style costume.

The front panel of the dress is embellished with an intricate embroidered design.

The soft serenity of Ron Booker’s Eleanor captured the look I wanted for my Christmas angel creation. Her delicate features are expressively innocent, and her hands and feet are beautifully sculpted.

While I was watching television one evening I saw a weather advent painted in silver metallic from head to toe. The effect was stunning and gave me the idea for my angel. With the Glitter Collection of china paints I would be able to enhance Eleanor’s mystical quality with a gorgeous gold shimmer.

With the metallic theme in mind, the hunt was on for all things gold: accessories, silks, threads, ribbons, beads, lace and trim. Originally unsure of how to coordinate all these different shades of gold, I was quite pleased with the overall harmonious effect when my Eleanor was finished. Although she is a shimmering Christmas angel, she also has the look of a medieval lady and can grace any doll scene all year round.

CHINA PAINTING

All china paint firings are to witness cone 018.

First Firing

Overall Wash

Mix Area Medium with Georgia Peach Glow to a creamy consistency. Use a Super Doll Sponge to apply medium all over the head, shoulder plate, arms and legs. Remove excess with a Lint-free Towel. Use a dry Super Doll Sponge to apply paint all over the face and body parts. Pounce color smooth with Large Complexion Brush. Finish polishing with Large China Mop. Use Clean Up Brush to remove paint from eye area.

Second Firing

Overall Wash

Mix equal parts Citrine Glitter, Pearl Glitter and Bronze Glitter with Area Medium to a light consistency. Apply second overall wash in same manner as first. After painting with metallic paints be sure to clean your brushes thoroughly.

Third Firing

Iris

Mix Wild Sage with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a creamy consistency. Use a Lip Definer to paint a round iris, with the very top part underneath the upper eyelid. Blend paint with a Petite Shader so that top portion of iris is darker and color gradually fades lighter toward bottom of eye, which will be pale.

Underbrow

Mix Eyebrow #4, Dark Brown, and a few grains of Satin Black with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a creamy consistency. Use a Lip Definer to paint a solid underbrow shape on the brow bone. Lightly blend the edges with a Small Contour Brush.

Lips

Mix Apricot Shimmer with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a creamy consistency. Use a Lip Definer to paint the first coat of lips. Blend and smooth the color with a Small Filbert.

Contour Shading

Use the same paint mixture as second overall wash and a Modern Lash Brush to apply paint into all the creases of face, hands, and feet, including eyelids and around the nose, mouth and ears. Blend well with a Mini Contour Brush. This will give a lovely glow to your doll.

Fourth Firing

Iris

Mix Dark Avocado with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a creamy consistency. Use a Lip Definer to darken the upper part of the iris and a Petite Shader to blend color downward. Darken some of the Dark Avocado mixture with Eyebrow #4, Dark Brown. Use a Petite Lip Brush to paint a thin outline around the iris.

Eyelashes, Upper Lid Line

Mix Eyebrow #4, Dark Brown, with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a light consistency. Use an Ultra Lash Brush to paint a fine line underneath the upper eyelid. Pull fine upper eyelashes from this lid line. Paint natural looking lower eyelashes.

Eyebrows

Use an Ultra Lash Brush and the underbrow mixture from the previous firing to paint fine eyebrow strokes on top of the underbrow. Vary the slant and length for a more natural look.

Lips

Paint second coat if needed.

Fifth Firing

Iris

Darken upper part of iris with the Dark Avocado from the previous firing.

Pupil

Mix Satin Black with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a creamy consistency. Use a Double Ball Stylus to paint a pupil in the center of each iris.

Eyelashes, Eyebrows, Lips

Mix Bronze Glitter with Area Medium. Use a Lip Definer to apply a line of color in the crease of the upper eyelid. Use a Mini Contour Brush to blend color on top of eyelashes and up into the eyebrows. Use Lip Definer to apply a line of color through center of mouth. Blend edges of this line slightly with Small Filbert.

Sixth Firing

Eye Highlight

Mix Whipped Cream with Ultra Fine Line Medium to a thick consistency. Use a Double Ball Stylus to apply a dot of color in each eye where the pupil meets the iris at the 2 o’clock position.

Blush

Mix Ruby Cheek Blush with Area Medium to a thick consistency. Use a Super Doll Sponge to apply medium over entire cheek area. Use a Multipurpose Blender/6 to apply a bit of color to middle of cheek. Blend outward with Mini Complexion Brush. Finish Blending with a Petite Mop. Apply blush to tops of hands and feet in the same manner.

Touch up other areas as needed.
