SEMINAR OFFERINGS: REPRODUCTION OF ANTIQUE DOLLS
(No doll substitutions without DAGSD approval)
The Classic Program is a course of study designed for dollmakers who wish to progress through the DAGSD learning the fundamentals and techniques for making reproductions of antique dolls.
Apprentice I: 3 days
This is an introduction to porcelain dollmaking. You will learn the fundamentals of casting, Dust-free Cleaning™ of soft-fired porcelain, firing a kiln, eye cutting, the Water-base Technique™ of china painting, and assembly of a cloth-bodied doll and an all-bisque doll. You will complete two dolls, one from group I and one from group II, and receive a free head mold, catalog, and Golden Key to Dollmaking. The hosting studio will furnish glass eyes and all other materials to complete both dolls. * Free Mold: OED3046: Dream Baby. (Needs OED3000A arm mold and BP06 body pattern which you can purchase.)

Apprentice II: 3 days
This seminar will challenge you to apply the skills gained in the Apprentice I seminar and to learn more advanced techniques. You will receive instruction in eye cutting, Dust-free Cleaning™, painted eyes, painting and stringing a composition body, and doll assembly with a cloth body. You will complete two dolls, one from group I on a composition body and one from group II on a cloth body. The hosting studio will furnish a composition body, glass eyes, wigs, and all other materials to complete both dolls.

Apprentice III: 3 days
This is the most advanced of the Apprentice seminars. You will receive instruction in eye cutting and sizing for paperweight eyes and the more advanced china painting of a French doll. You will complete one doll on a composition body and two heads (one from each group). The completed doll is from group II or III. The hosting studio will provide the composition body, glass or paperweight eyes, and wig for the completed doll.

After completing Apprentice I, II and III you will receive the title Certified Doll Artisan and will have acquired the skills to prepare for the Doll Artisan Proficiency Exam (DAPE)
Doll Artisan Proficiency Exam (DAPE): 1 1/2 days
Prerequisite: Apprentice I, II, and III.
If you are interested in teaching dollmaking or earning higher dollmaking titles, you can attain the title "Certified Seeley Product Teacher" by taking and passing the DAPE. On the first day, your instructor will review all of the dollmaking techniques and procedures, as well as the doll history you learned in the Apprentice seminars. You will complete a review booklet covering all topics on the exam and will use this booklet, along with the Golden Key to Dollmaking and any other relevant material, to study for the exam to be taken on the second day. The exam is normally completed by noon. You will receive your grade and certificate by mail.
Advanced French: 3 full days
Learn how to tackle the most challenging French brows and lashes, and study the history of this exquisite selection of dolls. One complete doll on a composition body and two other painted heads.

Sleep/Flirty Eyed Dolls: 3 days
Learn the advanced techniques for assembling and installing both sleep and flirty eyes in German dolls. One complete doll on a composition body and one other head with eye mechanism installed. Select one doll from Sleep Eyed seminar and one doll from Flirty Eyed seminar above.
Large German Dolls: 3 days
Work with the largest of the reproductions of antique dolls. Completed doll is 24" or larger. Learn the painting and history of each doll. One complete doll and one other finished head.

Rochard Inspired Dolls: 3 days
In the mid-1800's French doll maker Edmond Rochard made dolls whose shoulder plates were decorated with necklaces made of embedded see-through jewels with French scenes underneath. You will enjoy using this imaginative technique to embellish your fashion dolls. Complete one doll on a cloth body and paint one other shoulder-head or shoulder plate. NOTE: A wig may be made for the completed doll in lieu of second shoulder-head/shoulder plate.

Candy Container Dolls: 3 days
In 19th century Europe some companies produced dolls which were actually containers for holding almonds, candies and other delicacies. The doll's design and whether or not the costume will determine the number of dolls completed in this seminar also be completed.
A number of authentic candy container variations are being offered, using many different heads. Please contact the Seminar department for more information.
Doll House Dolls: Farmer's Family: 3 days
These unusual doll house dolls have eyes, hair, and part of their clothing sculpted into the porcelain. They are a family of seven: parents, grandparents and three children. Complete and costume two dolls and paint body parts for three others.
